Review

"I thought I'd killed the Ghost Pirate LeChuck for good. Wrong. How many times can that bloated old fool die? Other pirates tell me there's no escape. "When LeChuck wants you dead, you're dead," they say. Legend has it that the treasure of Big Whoop holds the key to great power... I must find it before Luchuck finds me."

And thus begins the second installment of the Monkey Island series. Our Lovable Anti-Pirate Hero Guybrush Threepwood had saved the day, killed LeChuck and won the heart of the beautiful governor Elaine Marley. But with no new tales to tell the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately bug has attacked our hero. He decides what better adventure than to find the legendary treasure that every swashbuckling pirate dreams of: Big Whoop. And so Guybrush sets out to conquer this new task, only to have LaGrand, LeChuck's second-hand man, steal all of Guybrush's possessions, including LeChuck's Beard, which LaGrand used to revive his old nemesis. To top that off, Guybrush is stuck on an island full of pirates, with no boat or way off the island.

When you start to play this game you immediately get hit with the familiar, wonderful tune that we know and love. The engine used to build this game was SCUMM. By that I mean the Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion. This was common back in those days, as all LucasArts adventure games of that era used that same engine. In order to interact with the world. The game requires you to build simple sentences chosen from a group of verbs, your inventory, and items you can click on in the world. The humor in this game is spot on with the type you would expect when playing through a Monkey Island game.

You get what you expect in a game of such classic caliber. If you don't know the Monkey Island series and want to get into it, then I'd still recommend that you play through the first game in the series, as this one serves as a wonderful second installment. You will fall in love with the characters and be taking aback by the great and humorous story telling.
